What is Essentially Ellington?
The Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Program (EE) is unique among educational resources for high school jazz bands. Each year Jazz at Lincoln Center transcribes, publishes, and distributes the music of Duke Ellington and other seminal big band composers along with additional educational materials to more than 3,300 high school bands in the U.S. and Canada and American schools abroad. All bands who receive the music are encouraged to submit a recording for the Essentially Ellington Competition & Festival held annually in New York City at Frederick P. Rose Hall, the home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Fifteen finalist bands are selected and during the three-day festival in May, they participate in workshops, rehearsals, and competition, performing in Rose Theater before a panel of judges.
